In this interview, I had the pleasure of speaking with Laura Burke from With Laura B, about pivoting her services in mental health for individuals and companies seeking to assist their employees.

Whatever we’re feeling, no matter our privilege, is still valid

Laura talked about the tendency to feel guilty about what we’re feeling, when we know we have so much to be grateful for. Her message to clients right now – and always – is that what we’re feeling is totally valid.

The medium is the message

When it came down to the business of pivoting, Laura stood firm in her beliefs about delivering a quality experience for her recipients – and determined that no, Zoom or other live online formats were not going to be the best for her services.

Being a mum of small humans and running a business during a pandemic – is next level challenging

Laura and I merely scratched the surface of the minefield of a conversation topic that is modern motherhood with young children, while running a business. She talks about the struggle to regain your own identity after having kids and how the pandemic ripped the rug out from underneath her. I wanted to dive so much deeper on this – the mum guilt, the identity crisis, the frustration at not being able to move at the pace you want, and then, uncovering what arbitrary forces are making us feel like we’re not achieving. But! I’ll save that for another time.

Speaking with Laura was like chatting with an old friend, even though we’d never met before. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

There are loads of important takeaways from this invigorating chat with Laura. Most poignantly for me was of course, what we feel is valid, so not to feel guilty about what we’re feeling as we navigate something that none of us ever has before. It was also the reminder that sometimes the method of distribution is as important as the product / service / content you’re delivering. The medium itself makes up so much of the end consumer’s experience, and in Laura’s case, that human element was critical.

Getting crystal clear on your target audience and their needs is key to delivering the perfect experience. I with non-apologetically plug my FREE Define Your Audience Workbook here, designed to help you do just that.
